Dorothy M. Watson, age 82 of Glenwood, formerly of Minneapolis, died Tuesday, May 6, 2014 at the Glenwood Retirement Village in Glenwood. A memorial service will be 10:00 am Wed, May 14, 2014 at the Shalom Ministry Center, 111 E. 5th Street in Starbuck, Minnesota. Interment will be at the Kinkead Cemetery in Alexandria. Dorothy Mildred Watson was a leap year baby born to Glen and Ada Schmelke Watson on February 29, 1932 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She grew up in Minneapolis and graduated from Marshall High School. She was married to Gerald Collier on June 25, 1949 at the local Presbyterian Church. They made their home in Minneapolis where they raised their five children. As the kids were growing up, Dorothy worked as a secretary at the Satterlee Company for several years. After Gerald and Dorothy were divorced in the early 1970s she moved to the Lake Reno area. She was married to Howard Smeby and they operated The Reno Inn until 1976. She relocated to Minneapolis and worked as a cook at restaurants in the Twin Cities. Dorothy loved to raise pets, bird watching an enjoying wild life. In 1989 she purchased a farm place near Glenwood and enjoyed ten years there until moving into town. Dorothy loved to sing and enjoyed reading, redecorating her home and good conversation at the kitchen table. She is survived by her daughter Patricia Peterson of Glenwood; sons, Michael Rebecca of Crystal, Martin of Glenwood and Kelly of Wayzata; seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her daughter Pamela; sisters Mary Ann Lewis, Deloris Taylor and Ramona Sawyer; son-in-law Keith Peterson.
