Donald "Donnie" Struntz's wild earthside journey ended March 30th, 2024. He passed away in his home in Arden Hills, where he lived independently exactly as he wanted.
Donnie was a character. His humor, penchant for storytelling, and trademark long hair made him unforgettable. When he lost his eye, it became a point of pride. He loved taking out his fake eye to startle people, and he fully embraced his wild look.
He was known for many things. As an adolescent, he was a skilled wrestler and always remained passionate about the sport. As he got older, he was a doting big brother, a friend, a partner, and a party animal. In adulthood, he became a beloved coach of his kids' sports teams. He had a lifelong love of fishing and the outdoors, and he especially loved the North Shore where he lived for many years. After his stroke, he continued to fish as much as possible.
Donnie was known as a talker. He would talk to anyone willing to listen, and even some who weren't. Just as Donnie had a story for everyone, everyone who knew him had a Donnie story.
Donnie is preceded in death by his parents and is survived by his children, grandchildren, ex-wife, siblings, and countless friends and family members whose lives he impacted.
We believe he's in a better place now, lighting up a smoke and telling a fish story. Donnie said he was going to come back as a red-tailed hawk. Knowing Donnie, he's probably doing both. So, if you see a red-tailed hawk, especially one with a fish in its mouth, odds are it's him.
Peace.
